Essential Oils

Essential oils are plant essences that have medicinal properties. Dr. Ricci uses several essential oil blends at the Belle Plaine Animal Hospital. Some of them are based on oil that is infused with 3 or more different herbs. She then adds essential oils to this infusion, creating very specific medication for each individual patient.

These essential oil blends are commonly used for the following conditions:

  • Anxiety issues, such as noise phobia (thunderstorms) and separation anxiety
  • When animals are not getting well with each other
  • Inappropriate urination
  • Upset stomachs and diarrhea
  • Sore backs
  • Sore Joints

Essential oils work by affecting the limbic system in the brain through the olfactory receptors in the nose. They can also work by being absorbed through the skin. When using essential oils as medicine, it is very important to have a therapeutic-grade oil. Dr. Ricci uses oils from Aromatics international, a very reputable company.

Essential Oils can be very strong medicine and should not be taken internally. They should be used in animals with caution and under the supervision of a veterinarian who is familiar with their properties.

Animals generally respond well to essential oils. In some instances, they have greatly reduced or eliminated our use of other western medications such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and anti-anxiety meds.
